Flying as Sport; What Would Wilbur Write Now?

Wright Brothersjetwhine writes "By Scott Spangler on February 20th, 2008 www.jetwhine.com - In the February 1908 Scientific American, Wilbur Wright wrote in Flying as Sport that up to that time "men have taken up flying partly from scientific interest, partly from sport, and partly from business reasons..." But recreational aviation would grow because "flying possesses attractions which will appeal to many persons with a force beyond that exercised by any of the similar sports, such as boating, cycling, or automobiling.""

Charles E. Taylor, Professional Aircraft Mechanic Pioneer.

Wright Brotherssuperg writes "Charles E. Taylor is aviation''s forgotten man. But not to U.S. aircraft mechanics, nor to Virginia Krause-Hess. "I was inspired by that wonderful man," said Krause-Hess, a Dayton, Ohio, sculptress, in a telephone interview. "He was an unassuming man who worked for the Wright brothers. In those days, when you worked for people, they got the credit for it... "

Wright Plane Replica Damaged in Crash.

Wright BrothersDAYTON, Ohio (AP): A replica of the Wright brothers’ plane crashed Friday during a demonstration to mark the 102nd anniversary of the aviation pioneers’ historic flight. There were no injuries, but the crash damaged the replica of the 1905 Wright Brothers Flyer III, a fragile aircraft made primarily of wood and fabric. Full Story.

Aviation Buffs to Mark Wrights 1st Flight.

Wright BrothersDAYTON, Ohio(AP) When Wilbur Wright soared into the sky over Huffman Prairie on Oct. 5, 1905, it was pretty much a private showing. Only a few friends and some local farmers witnessed the historic event. Thirty-nine minutes and 24 miles later when Wilbur landed after running out of fuel the Wrights had made their longest flight. Wilbur and his brother, Orville, declared that they now had the world''s first practical airplane. Full Story.

Wright plane replica flies here in April

Wright BrothersMore than a century ago, the first powered airplane took off and sustained flight for all of 12 seconds and 120 feet. But it was enough to inspire generations afterward to conquer the skies and someday, space.

''Defying Gravity'' Flies Through Art Museum.

Wright BrothersOn giant mounds of sand in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., two curious brothers put their fascination to flight on Dec. 17, 1903, and changed the world forever. Aided by ocean breezes, Orville and Wilbur Wright became the first men to successfully build and fly a manned airplane. One hundred years later, flight has changed nearly every aspect of our lives. The once simplistic designs of airplanes have evolved into sophisticated technological masterpieces that redefine everything from travel and trade to war and fear. In celebration and recognition of the centennial anniversary of the first flight, the North Carolina Museum of Art is presenting a one of a kind exhibit that depicts the ever-changing and multi-faceted themes flight encompasses.  Center in Orlando Shows Mystery Cloth That May Have Come From First Plane.

Wright BrothersORLANDO: The Shroud of Turin it''s not. But the postcard sized piece of white cloth on display at the Orlando Science Center carries a mystery not unlike that of the fabled, centuries-old burial shroud that bears the image of a crucified man who some think is Jesus of Nazareth. The Central Florida cloth, thought to be a piece of the original wing covering of the Kitty Hawk Flyer that launched the age of aviation 100 years ago, went on public display Saturday as part of the center''s ongoing "Touch the Sky" tribute to a century of aviation.  Weather Thwarts Wright Flyer Commemorative Flight.

Wright BrothersYesterday at 12:28 p.m. EST, EAA''s 1903 Wright Flyer attempted to make its commemorative flight in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, with pilot Dr. Kevin Kochersberger at the controls. With a breeze blowing at approximately 10 knots, the aircraft, powered by its 12-hp engine, headed into the wind. About two-thirds along the way, the wind suddenly decreased to an unfavorable 6 to 7 knots, which prevented the aircraft from taking off.

Building Working Replica of Wright Flyer Proves Nearly Impossible.

Wright BrothersThe Wright brothers made it look easy. After just one minor crash, their 1903 Wright Flyer took off and flew four times in a row. One hundred years later, some of the nation''s most experienced pilots and craftsmen are struggling to replicate that feat. They''ve taken decades to build a plane that the brothers assembled in a year. They''ve spent more than $1 million compared with the Wrights'' equivalent of $20,000. In the process, replicators have failed to get off the ground, crashed when they got aloft, broken some bones and bruised some egos. Full Story.

Terry Queijo and Kevin Kochersberger, along with their backup crew, are following in the footsteps of Orville and Wilbur Wright by training in a 1902 Wright glider reproduction, an authentic copy of the aircraft used by the brothers at the turn of the century to test their seminal theories of flight.  This Date in Wright Family History.

Wright BrothersOn this date in 1900, Wilbur arrives at Kitty Hawk, N.C. He spends time from Sept. 14-23 assembling their glider (much like a kite in 1900). From Sept. 13 to Oct. 2 he also works on constructing their camp. Orville leaves Dayton for Kitty Hawk for the first time on Sept. 24 and arrives on Sept. 28 by crossing the Albemarle Sound in a sailboat. The brothers stayed with postmaster William Tate until they could set up camp a half mile away. The 50-pound glider the brothers would test in 1900 had a 17-foot wingspan and cost them a total of $15. Full Story.

Wright Flyer Replica Stranded in Canada.

Wright BrothersA truck heist has grounded a replica of the Wright brothers'' original airplane. The Wright Flyer replica is stuck in Canada after a thief stole the diesel pickup truck that was taking it on a tour. Montreal was the first stop for the Flyer, which is scheduled to go next to Washington D.C. The truck pulled the replica to Montreal on a 30-foot trailer. The plane was dropped off at an aerospace conference. Nick Engler of the Wright Brothers Aeroplane Company says the truck was stolen Monday night from a hotel parking lot. The company built the 1903-model plane in Dayton. Full Story.
